Patch Tuesday December 2010 Report

December's version of Patch Tuesday sets more records. This month Microsoft released 17 patches for 40 different vulnerabilities. The total number of patches that address these vulnerabilities was a record high. The 40 vulnerabilities was the second highest, behind October's 49. 2010 also set the record for the highest number of security patches released in a year.

Patch TuesdayTwo of the patches were listed by Microsoft as "critical" and 14 were listed as "important".

Internet Explorer saw 7 vulnerabilities receive patches for all supported versions. One of which hackers have been exploiting over the last 6 weeks or so.

Microsoft Office XP and 2003 received patches for 7 vulnerabilities of their own. 2007 and 2010 were not affected by these issues.

Other items to be patched include the last of the vulnerabilities that were used by the Stuxnet worm and issues with some Windows components that were used for "DLL load hijacking".
