How do you setup Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free service offered by Google that provides web statistics for a website. They are aimed more at marketers than webmasters.

There are several steps required for setting up Google Analytics.

Firstly, you need a Google Analytics account. Having a Gmail account actually doesn't give you an Analytics account on its own. An account can be setup by going to http://www.google.com/analytics.

Once a Google Analytics account is setup, then it is important to configure the profile. This is where you specify the website you will be tracking. Separate profiles can be added for sub domains or other domains in order to separate the statistics. The profiles are also where rules are setup to specify what reports are seen.

For the Google Analytics to work, code needs to be added to the website. The required tracking code is provided from your account, and can be copied onto each page of the website. It can be placed on each page either by pasting the code onto each page or by the use of includes.

With the code added to the pages of the website, it's then just a matter of uploading the changes and waiting for the analytics to update! Within 24 hours, Google Analytics will be tracking your site! They can be checked at anytime by logging into the Google Analytics site or you can set up email reports and set intervals.
