Publishing With FTP
« Back to FTP Support
An FTP client is a program that enables you to connect and login to a FTP server and transfer files from a workstation computer to a server. If you do not have an FTP Client, you can use any FTP client you like such as FileZilla, WS_FTP, CuteFTP, or any other.
- Open an FTP client. (FTP = File Transfer Protocol)
- Enter ftp host name (domain name).
- Enter Username.
- Enter password.
- Then Connect.
- Once logged in choose the httpdocs directory. Your web site file should be uploaded into this directory.
- Select files from local directory; upload files to remote directory (httpdocs).
- View web site with browser goes to http://www.domain name.
You may find that you need to change your FTP client to "active mode" (rather than "passive mode")
Note: If your site has Microsoft FrontPage extensions setup, then you should use our Microsoft FrontPage publishing instructions to access your web space, instead of using the above FTP instructions.
FileZilla is a quick and easy FTP client to use. To upload files using FileZilla, open up the FileZilla program. In the Host field, type in your domain name. Then add in your Username and Password and click the Quickconnect button.
On the left hand side you will see the folders and files on your local computer. On the right hand side will be the server where your website is hosted.
The main folder your website is stored on will be under the httpdocs folder. You will need to select that folder from the right hand side. When it has been selected correctly, you will see /httpdocs listed next to Remote site.
You'll need to select the correct location that your site is stored on locally on your PC on the left hand side. Select the file(s) you wish to upload and then either drag them to the right hand side or right click and select Upload. The files will then upload from your computer to the server.
If you have trouble connecting, make sure FileZilla is in Active mode rather than Passive mode. To check this, click on the Edit menu and select Settings. Click on FTP from the tree on the left hand side. On the right hand side, select Active and then click OK.
