How to Setup Mail on Android Devices

Setting up mail on an android device can ONLY be done as an internet email account or other. Mail CANNOT be set up as Corporate Sync or Exchange Active Sync.

To set up a mail on an android device do the following.

  1. Tap the email icon. If there is no email icon on the home screen go to the application menu to find email and click on it.
  2. If there are no email accounts set up click on add account. If you already have an email account set up click on the menu capacitive button at the bottom of the screen.(It could be 3 horizontal lines, half a square and two horizontal lines, or may say menu) and then click add account.
  3. If you are given an option for the type of account (i.e. Cooporate Sync, Exchange Active Sync, Yahoo, Hotmail, Other) Click Other.
  4. Now enter your email address and password. Tap the back capacitive button (looks like an arrow) once so that the keyboard disappears. If you click Next the phone will try to auto configure the email. If successful go to step 9. Or you can click Manual Setup and enter the settings that follow.
  5. If you tapped manual setup. Select IMAP Account.
  6. If you have the option to change the server type from POP to IMAP please change to IMAP. Enter the following information:
    • User name: This will be your entire email address. (I.E. username@yourdomain.com or username@isoc.net)
    • Password: This may already be filled in. This is the password for the email account. It would be a good idea to re-enter it just to be sure.
    • IMAP sever: This will be mail.yourdomain.com or mail.isoc.net
    • Security type: This should be none.
    • Port: This should stay at the default of 143.
    • IMAP path prefix: This field is optional and should be left blank.
  7. Click Next depending on the phone the incoming server settings will be checked. Enter the outgoing server settings that follow:
    • SMTP server: This will be mail.yourdomain.com or mail.isoc.net
    • Security type: This should be set to None.
    • Port: This should be set to 587. If it is set to 25 change it to 587.
    • Require sign-in: This should be checked.
    • User name: This will be your entire email address. (I.E. username@yourdomain.com or username@isoc.net)
    • Password:This will be the password for the email account.
  8. Click Next Your device will now check the servers settings. If you receive an error go back through the steps and make sure everything is correct.
  9. Now you will have account options to configure. These options can be set to your preference.
    • Email check frequency This option is for how often your phone connects to the server to get new email.
    • Send email from this account by default If this is the only account this option will be checked. If it is not the only account you can make it your default account or not.
    • Notify me when email arrives This option is for having your phone play a sound and give a notification when new email comes in.
  10. Click Next
  11. Now you are on the Set up email screen with two settings to fill out.
    • Account name: This will be the name that is shown in the email client on the phone for the account.
    • Your name: This will be the name that shows up when you send an email from your phone.
  12. Click Done and this will take you to your inbox.

When setting email up on a phone we recommend setting it up as an IMAP account.
There may be issues with the phone or service provider for the phone that affect the set up.

Some standard android mail clients will allow you to set an option to delete from server when deleted from the phone. If the option is not there for your mail client download the k9 mail client to get this functionality.
