If you have a website, then you have probably been inundated at one time or another with spammers filling out your online forms. Spammers scan websites and use machines (bots) to fill out forms, sometimes over and over again. This can be more than just a nuisance of receiving hundreds or even thousands of emails, it can actually bog down your website or even make it unavailable, cause fake accounts to be set up, or send malicious files or links.
So what can you do to stop this?
This has been a long standing battle, and as attackers advance their techniques, so must the attacked. You may have been annoyed when filling out that form, to submit a calculation, or click on the images to prove you are human. These techniques, require human interaction to prevent machines from filling out forms. The challenge is, this can be so annoying, that some users may decide to not complete the form.
CAPTCHA – Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart
While no system is perfect, and spammers are constantly evolving, reCaptcha will stop most machines. However, it is not just machines filling out these forms, there are services where people are paid to fill out forms. Just as AI advances, machines get faster, and online behaviors change, so will the technology behind it and how we handle it.
Why is it free?
Google offers this free service, as it allows them to collect even more data to be used in their AI programs. This will ultimately give them more data about behaviors, systems, websites, and usage. While there are paid versions available, Google’s free version has dominated the market.
